As a result of Hawai‘i Appleseed’s efforts, as well as others, Bill 20 was passed in September 2015 legalizing accessory dwelling units in the City and County of Honolulu.
Hawaiian Community Assets (HCA) is a HUD-certified financial education and housing counseling agency that can assist you and your ohana to become financially qualified to secure loans and/or grants to build your ADU.
Sign up for HCA’s free services and you will be matched with a dedicated counselor who will help you develop a budget, review your credit report, conduct a mortgage qualification assessment, and assist you in applying for grants and loans to help build your ADU.
Hawaiian Community Development Board (HCDB) was incorporated as a Hawaii non-profit in 2000 with the mission of expanding affordable housing and community development opportunities for low-income families in Hawaii. Under the leadership of Kali Watson, the former Director of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) and with the support and guidance of a dedicated, knowledgeable Board of Directors that comprises community leaders throughout Hawaii, HCDB has established partnerships with housing developers and other community-based organizations to expand housing and economic development opportunities for low-income Hawaii residents. Since its inception, HCDB has focused on addressing specific housing needs of “hard-to-serve”, low-income Native Hawaiians living on the Hawaiian Home Lands.
